Hiroshima's oyster culture, with its nearly 450-year history, boasts Japan's No. 1 harvest volume and accounts for about 60 percent of the nation's total oyster harvest. From January through February, when in-season oysters are at their most delicious, the area of Hiroshima City and its environs holds the Oyster Festivals, an event for tasting fresh oysters.
The Oyster Festivals is organized mainly by the local fishery cooperative. Local people also look forward each year to this major winter event, which is unique to Hiroshima, because they can enjoy fresh oysters at discount prices. At the venues, visitors can try broiled oysters and oyster porridge prepared by local fishermen. Feel free to get your fill of freshly harvested oysters with their firm yet juicy texture, that ocean flavor filling your mouth as you chew!
